There is no doubt that a descriptive essay is all about the description. However, it is not always clear what exactly a descriptive essay should be about. A descriptive essay should be based on some observations which the writer is eager to share with the readers.

Steps to be taken to write a great descriptive essay

Do not think that writing a descriptive essay is easy only because it does not have to include facts and statistics. So, what should be in such an essay? Use these guidelines to write a descriptive essay worth a Nobel Prize:

  • Start with choosing a topic. There is much you can describe in your essay: nature, objects, people, feelings, etc. However, you need a purpose for the description. Think, what your essay should express. What would you like to deliver to your reader?

For example, you have chosen to write a descriptive essay about a book. Do not simply retell it or state that you liked it. Focus on something important that this book has taught you. Do not forget to support this with the examples from your book.

  • Feel the difference between telling and showing. Though you should write a descriptive essay, you are not supposed to tell your readers about what you describe. Instead, you should show this to them.

For example, instead of stating “The day started as usually”, it is better to write “The usual morning sun woke me up at 7:30” or something like this. Make your descriptive essay interesting to your readers!

  • Prepare a draft for your descriptive essay. When making observations, always write down what is the most memorable for you (smells, sounds, emotions, associations, etc). This will help to make your descriptive essay more expressive.

Bear this in mind when writing your descriptive essay. Good luck!
