- The first part of a research paper is its originality.

References are important because any information taken from a definite source without proper referencing is considered plagiarism. This means that you should consult the guidelines on a definite formatting and citation style (the most commonly used are MLA, APA, Harvard, and Chicago) and reference all sources accordingly.
